Riku just meant to watch people play chess with the old man--so when Clarke came up to him and inquired about his injured wrist, he'd been taken aback. Not only was she an adult, but she seemed to know what she was doing--all kinds of things that tended to make Riku shrink away. Even so, she doesn't seem to actually want to do him harm, and while he's still wary around her, he can't keep that on for long logically.
